We have been pumping since August and every 3 days since the very first day of pumping it's time for a site change. Site change consists of removing 2 sticky band-aid like plastic pieces, one of which has a needle attached. We use sure T infusion sets see below:

| The needle goes into Cara's body and insulin is "pumped" into her body |
Before pumping we were on MDI (multiple daily injections) which consisted of 5 shots a day with an insulin pen.

Cara loves pumping, Cara seems happier pumping, Cara loves eating anything she wants whenever she wants, Cara loves her PINK pump, Cara loves the freedom. I love the control, I love the blood sugar numbers we see with pumping, I love not needing to physically get the pen ready, dial up and inject insulin every time she eats, I love that everything is done by the touch of a button, I LOVE not having to do the math at every meal.
BUT the screaming and fighting is going to trump my happiness of pumping and turn us back onto injections.
Cara hates site change, she HATES everything about site change. She screams and kicks and fights the whole time we are doing it. From start to finish...SCREAMING. She is terrified but of what?
I can inject that kid 20 times and nothing, she does not even flinch but site change once every 3 days and she is flipping out. The most frustrating thing is as soon as it is all done she looks at me like "OH THAT'S IT, THAT'S ALL" Yes, Cara that is it we do this every 3 days!
It is almost enough to stop pumping...I said ALMOST!!

3 We CARA Lot about what you have to say (comments):
I hope it gets better for you and Cara.. Stick with it.. its got to get better with time.. We just started the pump as well its not the site changes that are making me mad/sad but the extreme highs and lows.. had me wanting to switch back to MDI until I see me son getting so excited that he can eat what he wants when he wants.. fighting the fight :)
Hi, we started a week ago and we are going through the same thing. She loves pumping for all the same reasons Cara does but freaks out when we start getting ready to change her site. The nurses tell me it gets easier with time and practice but seeing my brave little girl so scared makes me want to go back. I hope our girls somehow find a way to cope with site changes soon.
We've been pumping about 18 months now and it took Kortnie a good 6 months to calm down for site changes, and she still freaks out a little every now and then. We found it helped to bribe her a little. LOL I got a roll of those $1 coins at the bank and for every 2 site changes that she was "calm" at she'd get a coin. Also we started timing her site changes, and made it sort of a game to get the time down. Instead of taking 45 minutes we'd try to get it down to 30, etc, now we're down to 5-10 minutes start to finish. One other thing is that she doesn't like to have anyone in the room while we do it, just her and me, every now and then we let daddy in, but never her sister or brother or even the dog. Good luck, hope it gets better soon!
